Relationships, Intimacy & Sex Experience
The Relationships, Intimacy & Sex Experience (RISE) for gay and bisexual men is an event for any gay or bi man regardless of race, ethnicity, relationship status or HIV status. This means this experience is open to any African American/Black, Caucasian/White, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Native American, single, partnered, married, HIV-positive, and/or HIV-negative man over the age of 18.

The RISE workshop is COMPLETELY FREE and has been designed to meet the unique cultural and community needs of the gay and bisexual men of metropolitan Atlanta.

The RISE event is made up of 12 topic areas or “modules” that are covered during the Experience.

The 12 Topic Session Areas:
1. HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
a) To define “relationship”
b) To explore what works successfully in relationships
c) To identify societal judgments about male-male sexuality in our community
d) To examine the impact of HIV/AIDS on male-male relationships
e) To identify five characteristics of a healthy relationship
f) To identify the Stages of Gay Relationships
g) To identify the Stages of Love
h) To learn to evaluate your own relationships

2. BARRIERS TO HEALTHY MALE-MALE RELATIONSHIPS
a) To identify at least 13 potential barriers to male-male relationships being successful
b) To examine how HIV and AIDS have impacted the success of male-male relationships

3. REDUCING BARRIERS TO HEALTHY MALE-MALE RELATIONSHIPS
a) To identify ways to combat potential barriers to healthy male-male relationships
b) To examine one theoretical model of communication
c) To identify the five characteristics of a successful negotiation

4. GAY MALE DATING
a) To examine what gay male dating looks like today
b) To review opportunities for dating
c) To explore some dating myths
d) To discuss some dating Do’s and Do Not’s
5. HOMOPHOBIA
a) To define “homophobia”
b) To explore various types of homophobia
c) To identify societal judgments regarding sexual orientation
d) To explore myths versus facts about sexual orientation
e) To learn about how homophobia can impact sexual arousal
6. SELF-ESTEEM
a) To define “self-esteem”
b) To explore ways to improve self-esteem
c) To identify when self-disclosure is appropriate
d) To examine how men experience feelings
e) To learn the difference between being assertive versus being aggressive
f) To review the Black/African American Racial Identity Model
g) To review your Personal Bill of Rights
7. GENDER
a) To define “gender" versus "sex"
b) To define “masculine” versus “man”
8. TALKING THE TALK
a) To increase comfort talking about sex frankly and openly
b) To clarify vocabulary relevant to gay men
c) To examine gay male culture identity
9. MEN'S HEALTH
a) To deepen understanding of basic male anatomy
b) To learn how the male reproductive system functions
c) To explore the impact of drugs and other substances on male health
10. HIV/AIDS 101
a) To examine myths surrounding HIV
b) To examine how HIV works in the body
c) To explore how HIV is transmitted
d) To levels of HIV risk based on sexual activity choices
e) To identify legal aspects related to HIV
f) To explore condoms and lubricants
11. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
a) To identify the signs and symptoms of six major sexually transmitted diseases
12. HEALTHY SEXUALITY
a) To define “healthy sex” beyond just "safe sex"
b) To identify the ABC’s of Safer Sex fun
c) To explore sexual addiction and compulsion
d) To identify ways to manage risk triggers
e) To identify fun sex toys and appropriate use
f) To create a healthy sex plan
