Mental health providers have always been the heartbeat of Positive Impact. The agency began in April 1993 by linking clients with mental health providers willing to provide services on a pro-bono basis. Since then, Positive Impact has grown to nearly 50 full time staff and graduate-level interns providing culturally competent mental health, prevention services, substance abuse counseling and HIV testing and counseling.
For the past several years, Positive Impact has asked mental health providers across the profession to also support the work of the agency by contributing $100 as a member of the Valentine’s 100. This amount symbolizes an hour of a clinicians work, and is a way to show support for the heart of Positive Impact.
The past year had been a challenging year for anyone in the non-profit world, and most especially in the AIDS service community. The Department of Human Resources was reorganized into the Department of Community Health, causing delays in funding and grants being placed on hold. Ryan White funding, critical to nearly every HIV service organization, nearly disappeared in October 2009. And, individual giving is down.
Still, Positive Impact continues to grow. In 2009, the agency opened 5 new programs, and provided over 6,000 hours of counseling to clients affected by HIV. Thanks to continued donor dedication, Positive Impact administered 2,586 HIV tests, and helped change the lives of 50 men and women as they struggled with drug addiction every day.
